UI Foundation/UI Advancement Weekly Update 02.04.22

Happy Friday:

The first week of February was the start of what is shaping up to be a busy month of travel and off-campus meetings, during which I will be spending most of my time surrounded by volunteers. Earlier this week, along with several of our UIF Board members, I attended the Association of Governing Board (AGB) annual Foundation Leadership Forum. Next week, the UIF will hold its annual Winter Board Meetings.  The participants in both events were, and will be, primarily volunteers. And that reminded me of how fortunate we are to have alumni who say "yes" when asked to invest their valuable time in their alma mater—in addition to those who contribute to the university financially.

The word "volunteer" is derived from a Latin word meaning “of one's free will”—free being the keyword in that definition. The time and expertise our Board members and other volunteers provide is free, but its value is immeasurable. Many of you have heard me say, “If we had to pay the day rates of our volunteers, we could not afford them.As such, it is as critical to appropriately acknowledge and steward those who contribute time as it is to thank and care for those who provide financial gifts. You can never say or show your thanks enough. So, when our volunteers willingly and enthusiastically give their time, be sure to be equally enthusiastic in your acknowledgment of them.

In addition to being passionate about the University of Illinois, many of our volunteers are also incredible leaders whom we can learn from, which is another invaluable gift. I am thankful for the opportunity to spend time with these leaders, counselors and ambassadors. Without our volunteers, the work we do would not be possible. I know you are all busy, but I would encourage all of us to make a concerted effort this week to tell our volunteers we appreciate them.

Enjoy the month of February and all that comes with it, including Black History Month, and this year, the Winter Olympics. For those who love snow, this weekend is for you, and for those who don't, hunker down with a hot beverage and a blanket, and stay warm.

Best,

Jim
