UI Foundation/UI Advancement Weekly Update 11.24.21
Since 1863 when President Abraham Lincoln proclaimed a national day of Thanksgiving, Americans have been celebrating the holiday each November. While today Thanksgiving tends to focus on food, let’s not forget the giving thanks part of the season.
Even in a pandemic, we all have many things and people for which to be grateful. Take a moment to share your gratitude with the people who make a difference in your life—family, friends, co-workers, community members— including the cashier who rings up your Black Friday purchases. Each time you do, you will not only bring a bit of satisfaction or happiness to their lives, but you may also bring fulfillment to your own, as research tells us gratitude can impact the thanker as much as the recipient. How different would our world be if we all said “thank you” more often?
I imagine most of us are thankful for good health so, if you plan to spend time with extended family or you are out in larger groups this weekend, be sure to take precautions to maintain your wellbeing and that of those around you. As you likely have heard, COVID cases are inching up again, and of course, our “regular” cold and flu season is here so be extra careful (and keep washing those hands).
Thank you once more for your contributions to our development program and for everything you do in support of the University of Illinois. Best wishes for an extended holiday weekend filled with rest, relaxation, family, friends, and, of course, FOOD!
Cheers,
Jim
