UI Foundation/UI Advancement Weekly Update 10.08.21

Dear Team:

The 2021 University of Illinois Foundation Weekend is now history, and it was undoubtedly one for the books.  Up until last weekend, we conducted every Foundation event and Board meeting since March 2020 entirely virtually.  So, it was exciting to finally gather in person with members of our Board, Foundation members, and a host of other faithful and loyal alumni and friends (in accordance with all CDC and campus guidelines, of course).  One of the things I've missed most throughout the pandemic is the ability to thank our donors in person.  Last week was inspirational and energizing for me and I know many of you felt the same way.

It was a terrific weekend made possible by an incredible cast.  I want to thank everyone who played a role in the production of our "Together we are Unstoppable" weekend.  I know the list of helping hands is long and I apologize in advance for not mentioning everyone by name.  I do want to offer my personal and special thanks to UIF, Director of Marketing and Communications Sue Johnson and her team for producing the Annual Meeting 2021 video, and also to Jacque Schweighart and her staff for coordinating the UIF Board Meeting, its associated events, and activities for Foundation members.  A big thanks as well to the UIUC Advancement Team who did a fabulous job showcasing our donors and the impact of philanthropy (thanks Barry, Alex and team)!  I realize the circumstances you all had to manage were challenging and constantly changing, but nonetheless, you all handled it masterfully.  KUDOS one and all!!!

One summary reflection from last week for me is the humbleness of many of our major donors.  It was moving and inspiring to hear our donors thank the university for giving them the opportunity to give back to their alma mater.  Their stories were good reminders of the importance of getting to know what is most important to our donors, and not simply presenting our own priorities and cases for support.  We need to work closely and personally with our donors to explore and create philanthropic opportunities that mean as much to them, as they do to the university they love.

Thanks again to everyone for making Annual Meeting 2021 a memorable and meaningful experience.  Let's continue to do what is required to make Annual Meeting 2022 even better!

Enjoy the summer-like weather that is still hanging around, have a great weekend and stay safe and well.

Best,

Jim
