UI Foundation/UI Advancement Weekly Update 03.05.21

Dear Team:

Spring doesn’t officially begin for a couple more weeks, but don’t tell the weather gods. After the blast of freezing cold and snow that impacted so much of the country a few weeks ago, it’s nice to have some warmer temps. As we all know, our predictably unpredictable Midwestern weather can turn on a dime, so take advantage of the beautiful days.

In addition to the beginning of the first full season of the calendar year, March also includes several other exciting events.  For those who work in any level of education, March is the traditional month for Spring Break. Though not an “official” holiday for most of the working world, taking a break or short vacation in the spring is not a bad idea if you can pull it off.  The good news for many of us is we have plenty of vacation time still on the books, so I urge you all to think about managing your calendars so you can enjoy some downtime. Yes, I know you are all extremely busy, and your work-life balance scale may be a bit crazy, but that is precisely why you need to take a break.

While you may not be able to take that trip to the beach, or somewhere else you would go in a typical year, any time away can help recharge your batteries. Consider going on an impromptu vacation or taking a few days here and there.  The end of FY21 will come quickly and (for UIF staff), we don’t want you to lose any of your well-deserved paid time off.  After this email goes out, I am actually taking the day to relax a bit myself. As many of you know, I enjoy food, so my “day away” involves a trip to Springfield for some grocery shopping at Roberts Seafood. Not glamorous, but certainly worth the trip.

Whether it’s a day trip or some quiet time with a book, continue to make your mental and physical health a top priority. A third vaccine was approved this week, and the UI received FDA approval and emergency use authorization for our SHIELD Illinois COVID test. Things are looking up, but we are not out of the woods yet. If we all continue to do our part to keep ourselves and those around us safe, we can get there sooner rather than later.

On that note, it’s time to get to Springfield. Have a great weekend, and for the basketball fans among us, enjoy the tournament season. The Fighting Illini have a big game tomorrow and a promising post-season, so Go Illini!

Best,

Jim
